Stanley Kubrick’s final great masterpiece, Eyes Wide Shut, returns to the big screen at Giunti Odeon in a newly restored version: an extraordinary psychological thriller that explores the darker sides of desire, fidelity and power, starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. William Hartford, a successful doctor, and his wife Alice appear to be a happy, problem-free couple. One evening they attend a party at a friend’s house, where Alice is persistently courted by an elegant and persuasive Hungarian man who tries to seduce her, despite her insisting that she is a happy wife and mother. Back home, William and Alice begin to discuss what happened; he tells her he saw everything, she says she waited in vain for him to come and rescue her from that situation and that she saw him instead in the company of attractive young women who were surrounding him to take advantage of him. So William goes out to pay his respects to a patient who has recently died, and to comfort the man’s daughter. As he is about to leave, the girl hugs him tightly, saying she has always been in love with him. Disturbed, William does not return home straight away; he walks on, allows himself to be persuaded by a woman on the pavement, follows her, but then, at her flat, changes his mind and leaves. But by now William is obsessed with the idea that Alice might be having affairs with other men, and in an attempt to overcome this obsession, he allows himself to be drawn into a series of situations that lead him to join a pianist friend who has been hired to play at a strange party. William thus finds himself caught up in a succession of orgiastic rituals, where people wearing masks are engaged in sexual acts and couplings that leave William feeling fearful and awestruck...
