Sofia Coppola's most famous film returns to Giunti Odeon, in a newly restored version. At the age of twenty-seven, Sofia Coppola reads Jeffrey Eugenides' novel, draws a screenplay from it and submits it to Muse Productions, which has optioned the rights to the book. Daddy Francis intervened by offering substantial support from American Zoetrope and Sofia was able to shoot in serene independence. The film will please the critics, please the audience, please Eugenides. The story is that of five sisters who take their own lives in an inexplicable and silent collective suicide, against the backdrop of a weak and oppressive family, of a 1970s America whose contours blur in a faintly dazzling light; Sofia Coppola begins to trace here her map of early female youth, which she will always observe as a familiar and foreign landscape.
