Eddie Felson is a young man with a violent and proud character. From the age of sixteen, he chose his career: that of a billiards "champion." One day, Eddie decides to challenge the unbeatable "Minnesota Fats," the champion of Chicago. He teams up with his friend and manager Charlie and tours all the pool halls in the Midwest, playing various matches to collect a large sum of money. After raising six thousand dollars, Eddie heads to Chicago and goes to the great Bennington hall. Spotting "Minnesota," he publicly challenges him. At first, Eddie wins, but later he loses control of his nerves, and his opponent ends up winning.

One morning in a bar, Eddie befriends Sarah, and the two end up living together. Continuing to frequent the gaming halls, Eddie meets Bert Gordon, an exploiter of pool players, who offers him help in exchange for a percentage of the winnings. Eddie refuses that kind of work but later accepts. Taken again by the demon of the game, Eddie slowly drifts away from Sarah. The girl, who had found a reason to live in her love for the young man, feels the weight of loneliness and, disgusted by the immorality of the world around her, accepts Bert's advances in a final act of degradation, and then kills herself.

Eddie, match after match, eventually challenges "Minnesota" again, finally beating him and taking thirteen thousand five hundred dollars from him. Bert demands his cut, and Eddie, after paying him, vows to free himself from that slavery. The news of Sarah's death deeply saddens him and makes him realize that he has lost the only real thing in his life.
